HYBRID EDUCATION SERVICES SUMMER INTERNSHIP (INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM AND CITIZENSHIP)

This internship will follow a hybrid model of both remote and in-person work. However, we are open to considering fully remote applications for those who may be interested in this option. 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Rian Immigrant Center, located in downtown Boston, Massachusetts, is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Citizenship and IAP program intern. This intern role offers an opportunity for someone interested in empowering immigrants and refugees through U.S. citizenship, career goals support, and continued education support. This role is also an opportunity to become part of a team dedicated to helping immigrants integrate into their new communities. This is an exciting chance for someone to make a positive difference in the lives of immigrants, learn new organizational, technical and communication skills, and gain a deeper appreciation for a diverse range of cultures and viewpoints. In this role, you will gain experience as part of a small and supportive Education Services team in a non-profit setting, be given significant responsibility, and receive on-the-job training and support.

TIME COMMITMENT

15-20 hrs per week, between Monday and Friday (your weekends will always be free!). We are open to working with intern’s schedules and may be able to offer less or more hours as per both the student’s and Rian’s needs.

DATES

  • Spring semester: January to May
  • Summer semester: May to August RECRUITING FOR SUMMER NOW!
  • Fall semester: September to December

*Start and end date are adjustable as needed.

COMPENSATION

  • We welcome applications from students who qualify for work study compensation
  • We are happy to assist with any requirements to qualify an eligible intern for academic credit or external funding/fellowships
  • We offer a modest cost of living monthly reimbursement stipend - please inquire for details

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES may include:

  • New Student Intakes
    • Monitor incoming intake form responses and contact prospective students (phone calls, whatsapp messages, email) to schedule a screening call over Zoom based on the availability indicated on their intake form.
    • Conduct Zoom screening calls with prospective Citizenship students to assess their needs and whether our program can support them or not (following the call script provided). 
    • Input new student information into Salesforce and add new students to the program course lists.
    • Refer students as needed to external services using the list of partner organizations provided and/or researching options beyond the main list.
  • Student Tech Support
    • Provide individual tech coaching online or at the Rian office to IAP/Citizenship students at varying levels of digital literacy on how to use their personal laptop or a Rian loaner Chromebook to access their IAP/Citizenship tutoring sessions and/or how to navigate general digital tasks (i.e. sending an email, checking an application status online…etc.).
  • Community Outreach
    • Create/update program fliers that can be used to advertise each program.
    • Share program information with partner organizations and request updated program information from them to maintain referral relationships.
    • Research and collect info on job/education/training opportunities in the greater Boston area and organize that info into a shareable form for students to access (e.g. email newsletter, infographics and links, Whatsapp community group chat).
  • Collaboration
    • Set personal and professional goals for your internship experience.
    • Attend regular check-in meetings with your supervisor.
    • Attend monthly Rian all-staff meetings.
    • Attend weekly Education Services team meetings.
    • Attend Anti-Racist Study Hall meetings.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES may include but are not limited to:

  • Tutoring individual students in Rian’s Individual Achievement Program (IAP)
  • Tutoring individual students in Rian’s citizenship tutoring program
  • Hosting online ESOL conversation groups
  • Adapting program documents for student accessibility
  • Collaborating with the Communications team on fliers and infographics for students
  • Performing data collection, entry and clean-up as needed for grant reporting
  • Accompanying Education Services staff on in-person, outdoor student meetups
  • Other administrative tasks as assigned by supervisor


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency with Zoom and Google apps (Drive, Sheets, Docs, Calendar, etc.)
  • Excellent empathy, verbal and written communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual (Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred - must have conversation skills - high beginner proficiency or higher) or multilingual
  • Experience traveling/studying/living/working outside of the US
  • Experience with immigrant/refugee populations
  • Experience as a Teaching Assistant or tutor
  • Experience with data entry (particularly Salesforce), WhatsApp, and/or Google Classroom
