Engineering/GIS Internship

City of Portsmouth's Engineering and GIS Division is seeking two (2) motivated and detail-orientated interns for the Spring and Summer of 2026! The Engineering/GIS Interns will support the Engineering and GIS staff in field collection data, asset inventory, and condition assessments of public works infrastructure. This internship offers valuable experience in environmental fieldwork, GIS systems, asset management, and municipal engineering operations. 

Hours: 12-40 hours a week. Intern will likely begin part-time in March 2026. A full-time schedule of 37.5 hours a week is expected during the summer, with the possibility for part-time work in the fall. 
Schedule: Monday-Friday: 8am-4:30pm with flexibly during the school calendar year.
Pay rate: $19.00 per hour.


NATURE OF WORK
Interns will assist the Engineering and Water Divisions and GIS staff in asset inventory and conditional assessment of public works infrastructure throughout the community.  Candidates for this position will be required to perform field work on foot as well as driving to field sites.  Additionally, during rain events, this position will assist with the collection of water quality samples related to stormwater infrastructure.  Both field and office work will provide the opportunity to use and learn the ArcGIS desktop 10.8.2 and ArcGIS Pro 3.5 application as well as operate a survey grade GPS unit.
 

SUPERVISION
Incumbent works under the general supervision of the GIS Manager or their designee. Work is generally reviewed through periodic meetings with Senior Staff.
 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Assists staff with research, projects, and reports.

2. Performs site walks, documentation, and field measurements.

3. Conducts records research, data collection, quantity take-offs, and engineering calculations.

4. Prepares a variety of exhibits using AutoCAD and the City’s GIS.

5. Perform administrative tasks such as documenting activities, measuring and testing.

6. Providing general oversight.

7. Interact with contractors, subcontractors, residents, and city staff.

8. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

ENVIRONMENT, WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT
Work is performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.  Position requires lifting up to 100 pounds and walking through wooded terrains. 

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.  Experience in Geography, Geology, Natural Resources, Water Resources, Engineering, or related field.  Knowledge of ArcGIS desktop and/or GPS collection is desirable but not mandatory.  Training will be provided.
