Project Management Information Systems (PMIS) Intern

About the MBTA Capital Investment Program 
 
The MBTA Capital Investment Plan (CIP) is a rolling 5-year, $8 Billion plan, updated annually, which includes over 400 unique capital projects. Through projects like these, the MBTA is working to improve reliability, safety, and accessibility for all riders. The CIP also will improve and modernize assets, expand service, and meet our strategic priorities and performance goals, informed by the long-term plans of the MBTA and the region, such as Focus40 and Destination 2040. 
 
The Project Management Information Systems, as part of the Office of the Chief of Capital Programs, is responsible for providing the enabling technology to develop and track project performance metrics for MBTA Capital Programs and implementing strategic initiatives with a focus to improve the delivery of capital projects.  
 
Position Summary 
 
Under the direction of the Director-PMIS, the PMIS Interns will assist in the overall system support, analysis, and reporting for projects within the Authority's PMIS, with the goal of helping Capital Programs staff plan, execute, and close-out projects. 
 
Job Responsibilities 
 
Reporting and Dashboard Development 
  • Assist in the development and implementation of computerized project reporting, analytics and dashboards. 
  • Review of existing dashboards and development of new data visualizations  
  • Assist with cost management, including trending and change management. 
 
Business Process Workflow Digitization 
  • Work with PMIS System Administrators and Capital Delivery stakeholders to align electronic workflows with standard operating procedures 
  • Assist with configuration of end user roles and permissions 
  • Collaborate with the PMIS System Administrators on identifying workflow enhancements/improvements  
  • Coordination of meetings related to requirements gathering, workflow design, preliminary testing, and User Acceptance Testing (UAT) 
 
Data Management and Analysis 
  • Review project data and ensure data adequacy, accuracy and legitimacy of data 
  • Support others in the daily use of data systems (PMIS, CMS, FMIS) and perform data extraction/analysis 
  • Help troubleshoot data-related issues in PMIS 
  • With guidance develop new reports and dashboards to provide improved and more sophisticated analysis 

Other 
  • Assist in the design and development of new computerized reports and dashboards using data visualization tools such as e-Builder or Tableau. 
  • Assist with the development of monthly project reporting materials, including high quality charts, tables, and presentations. 
  • Perform assigned tasks involving data cleaning, data analysis, qualitative and quantitative analysis, and writing and proof reading presentations and project reports. 
  • Perform related duties and projects as assigned. 
 
Qualifications and Requirements 
 
  • Problem-oriented thinking, including ability to break down problems and identify appropriate tools for addressing each step. 
  • Quantitative / analytical perspective and attention to detail, with an ability to critically review data and communicate technical knowledge to a non-technical audience. 
  • Graduate/Undergraduate students currently enrolled in; Civil/Transportation engineering, Urban Planning, Architecture, Business, Computer Science, IT, Public Policy, Economics or other STEM disciplines with coursework and/or experience in: 
  • Data visualization and analytics 
  • Construction Project Control and Organization 
  • Construction Management 
  • Financial Management for Engineers 
  • Engineering Probability and Statistics 
  • Financial Reporting and Managerial Decision Making 
  • Reliability Analysis and Risk Assessment 
  • Business Analysis and Information Engineering 
  • Alternative Project Delivery Methods and Project Controls 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications. 
  • Experience with Business Intelligence (BI) dashboard applications and data analytics software a plus. 
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline-oriented environment, with multiple competing priorities/projects. 
  • Experience and interest in transit or transportation a plus. 
  • Highly organized with ability to manage time, resources, and people, with an exceptional ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills. 
  • Strong attention to detail. 
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and presentation skills. 
  • Prior co-op/internship experience a plus.

Compensation: 
Undergraduate: $16.50-$19.50 per hour  
Graduate: $21 to $24 per hour (depending on experience)
